Competition Teams: The Benefits and Lessons Gained

Joining a regular class is one kind of commitment. Joining a Competition Team is another. If you have been feeling ambitious and hungry for more, here's what actually changes, and what you stand to gain.

More Than Just More Practice

A Competition Team isn't just extra class time bolted onto a regular schedule. It usually means additional rehearsals, a more structured commitment, and prep that builds toward a specific date rather than an open-ended term. That's a bigger ask, and it's also where a lot of the growth happens.

Being on the team also opens the door to more than just group numbers. Dancers on our Competition Team can take on solo, duo, trio, and ensemble categories too, each one training a different skill (a solo demands owning the stage alone, a duo or trio demands syncing tightly with just one or two partners).

What a Crew Actually Teaches

  • Accountability to other people, not just yourself. Missing a rehearsal or half-learning a section doesn't just affect one dancer, it affects the whole formation.

  • Trusting spacing and timing you can't fully control. A group number only works if everyone's counts line up, which means learning to rely on teammates, not just your own execution.

  • Learning to lead and to follow. Depending on the number, a dancer might be the one setting the energy in a section, or the one locking into someone else's lead. Both are skills.

Building Real Friendships Through Shared Pressure

There's a specific kind of bond that forms between teammates who've sweated through the same training classes, rehearsals, and then nailed it as a group. Competition teams often become some of the closest friendships a young dancer has, built on shared effort rather than just shared class time.

Beyond the Stage: What Else the Team Gets Access To

Being on the Competition Team also comes with opportunities that go beyond weekly rehearsals and competition days:

  • Overseas immersion programmes. Our comp team dancers have had the opportunity to train overseas, in Korea and Japan over the past two years (and many more great countries before that), and this runs as an annual programme. It's a completely different kind of learning, training in another dance culture, alongside dancers outside their usual circle.

  • Acrobatic training. Comp team dancers also get access to acrobatic training, building strength, flexibility, and tricks that add another dimension to their performance capability.

  • Exclusive access to guest instructors. For special events like our previous LUMINA Showcase 2025 or our upcoming IMPEL programme, Competition Team dancers get the chance to train directly under renowned guest instructors, a level of access and mentorship that isn't part of a regular weekly class.

Am I Ready?

A few signs a Competition Team could be a good next step:

  • You genuinely enjoy repetition and drilling, not just the performance moment

  • You take feedback well, even when it's not what you wanted to hear

  • You're longing for more than one class a week, due to a genuine passion and ambition

How to Get Started

If this sounds like you, Competition Team auditions are a great place to find out. Auditions for both mvAVE and DFK Junior & Teens Competition Teams are happening 9 November 2026 (Monday). Do check out these pages for more information on auditions and training schedules. We'd love to see your dancer on that stage next.
