RSL Exams: How to Train Your Child at Home

You don’t need to know how to dance to help your child practice. Just follow the six steps below to find their exam videos and music.

Before You Start
Check these two things with your child or their teacher first:
Grade: which grade they're sitting for
Genre: house, popping, breaking or locking, whichever they're doing alongside hip hop
Step 1: Sign In or Create an Account

Already have an account? Sign in.
New to the portal? Tap "Create an account" and fill in your username, email, name and password.
(You can also continue with Apple, Facebook, Google or Microsoft)
Step 2: Open Stageschool Resources

Once you're registered, you'll land on the portal's home page.
Click "Access Stageschool Resources".
Step 3: Choose Street & Commercial Dance

From the Resources dropdown, select
"Street & Commercial Dance".
Step 4: Select Your Child's Grade

Pick their grade from the dropdown.
Options run from Grade One to Grade Eight.
Not sure which one? Ask your child or their teacher.
Step 5: Find the Right Videos
Now pick the genre your child is doing: house, popping, breaking or locking.
Requirements are different for each grade, so check which videos your child needs to learn.

The standard requirement is to learn (that can be accessed from the website) :
Hip Hop
Their genre (house, popping, locking or breaking)
Commercial dance
(A quick tip: the videos are meant to be learned by mirroring the screen. If the dancer on screen raises their left arm, your child should raise their right)
**Other things to check with your teacher (that are not accessible in the website) : the song for the 1.5 minute performance, plus freestyle for higher grades (Grade 4 onwards).
Step 6: Practice With the Music
The portal also has music for each category: Breaking, Comm A, Comm B, Hip Hop, House, Locking and Popping. Play the matching track so your child practices to the real music, not just the counts.

Tips for Parents
Practise a little, a few times a week. About 10 to 15 minutes each time is enough. Short sessions are easier to keep up than one long session the night before the exam.
Ask your child to show you. Play the video and let them show you what they’ve learned so far.
Don’t worry about fixing their moves. You’re there to help them practice, not to correct them. If something looks off, tell their teacher and they’ll sort it out in class.
Keep it relaxed. Make it fun for them! They may not show it but they might need emotional support to get through this phase.
