RSL Street Dance Examinations at 5th Avenue: Building Credentials That Open Doors

Updated: Aug 25
Not every milestone in a dancer's journey happens on a competition stage. Some of the most important ones happen in our studios, in front of a single accredited examiner, where it's just the dancer, the music, and months of preparation being put to the test.
That's what an RSL examination is, and registration for this year is open.
2025 Results
🏅 136 Distinction  🏅 82 Merit
Numbers like these are proof of what consistent training and proper technique can do, and a good benchmark for what this year's cohort can aim for.
What Is an RSL Examination?
RSL (Rockschool) is an internationally recognised certification that allows dancers to be assessed in street styles like hip hop, popping, locking, and more. Unlike a recital, where the goal is to perform for an audience, an RSL exam is a formal, structured assessment of a dancer's technique, musicality, and artistry, graded against a set syllabus by an accredited examiner.
At 5th Avenue, our students train towards these exams to build strong foundations, gain performance confidence, and work towards recognised qualifications, with higher grades even contributing to DSA pathways.

Why Being Judged by an Accredited Examiner Matters
There's a real difference between a teacher telling you "great job this term" and an independent examiner assessing your technique against an international syllabus.
Preparing for an RSL exam builds:
Precision. Exams reward clean technique, not just energy, dancers learn to sweat the details.
Composure under scrutiny. Being assessed one-on-one (or in a small group) by someone who isn't your regular teacher is a different kind of pressure, and a valuable one to learn to handle early.
A genuine benchmark. Grades and feedback give dancers (and parents) a clear, objective sense of progress, not just a feeling.
The Credential Itself
Passing an RSL exam isn't just a certificate to frame. It's a recognised, portable qualification, one that follows your dancer regardless of which studio they train at in future, and one that carries weight because it's assessed externally, not by us.
The DSA Angle
For parents thinking ahead to Direct School Admission, RSL qualifications are the kind of external accreditation that can support a DSA application in relevant categories, a documented, examiner-verified record of achievement in dance, rather than just "my child has been taking lessons."
Worth noting: DSA outcomes depend on each school's specific criteria and the overall application, so an RSL credential is best thought of as one strong piece of supporting evidence, not a guaranteed ticket in. But it's a credential that's genuinely earned, verifiable, and recognised, and that counts for something.
